How Does Ad Blocking Affect You?
07/13/2013

Did you know that blocking ads hurts not only the websites you visit but it also hurts you? We understand that not many of our users are aware of this and rather than blocking the use of ad blockers we have chosen to enlighten you.

There is a common misconception that if a user never clicks on ads, then blocking them won't hurt anyone. This is wrong. Sites like ours are paid on a per ad view basis. If you have an ad blocker running, any time you load anything on the site or app, you are consuming bandwidth and other resources but provide us with no revenue. Because we cater to users who root their devices, we have a very large group of users who use ad blockers. Imagine running a restaurant where 40% of the people who came and ate didn't pay. In a way, that's what ad blocking is doing to us. Just like a restaurant, we have to pay for resources, and we have to pay when people consume those resources. The difference, of course, is that our visitors don't pay us directly but indirectly through advertising.

I am not saying that blocking ads is a form of stealing, or is immoral, or wrong. What I am saying is it can result in less content on any site, and it definitely can affect the quality of that content.

We understand that ads can be annoying and intrusive but we really do limit the amount of ads to the bare minimum required to cover our costs for hosting and maintaining the site and app. We are in fact working on an ad free version of the app that will be available through the Google Play Store.

This last month was the first month since the beginning of The Repo that we were unable to cover the costs of bandwidth and hosting using only our ad revenue. As much as we’d like to say we have the money to cover this on a regular basis the fact of the matter is that we don’t. We have families, homes and expenses outside of running a website and can’t afford to be paying the several hundred dollars it requires to host the site.

Now don’t worry! We are not going anywhere yet! We have every intention of sticking around. In fact we won’t even stop you from using the site or app if you’re using ad blockers. We only ask that for the benefit of the site, the community and you, that you consider removing your ad blockers.

Thank you,
